About the Course
In 2019 I developed and launched a course for nutrition and dietetic professionals that would help prepare them to use Intuitive Eating and non-diet approaches to nutrition in their clinical practice. I retired the course in 2022, feeling that it needed updated and refreshed – something I did not have capacity for at the time. Over the past few years I have been exploring the strengths and limitations of the Intuitive Eating approach, both in my practice with clients, and in conversation with colleagues. I wanted to reboot the course, incorporating these learnings and presenting the complexities and nuances of this work. This new offering has the same commitment to providing practitioners a thorough and critical review of the evidence base to bring knowledge up to date, as well as offering practical tools and skills they can use immediately in their practice. This new iteration will also hold a lens to the critiques, limitations, nuance, and complexities of practicing Intuitive Eating and NDAs. Fully updated, refreshed, and revised in 2024, the course consists of recordings of 6 x 90 minute live modules, relevant literature, client worksheets, and further reading, PDFs of scientific papers (including background reading), and other materials that will support your practice. You’ll also be invited to join a live session on Wednesday 10th July at 4pm BST.

What we'll cover:
Module 1: Introduction to Intuitive Eating and the Non-Diet Approach
Learn how dieting and weight focussed interventions may be causing more harm than good and how to help your clients move from weight loss towards Intuitive Eating using non-diet tools and principles. In this module we will critically reflect on how we position ourselves as weight-inclusive practitioners, who may benefit from this type of work, and where the limitations of this approach to nutrition and dietetic work lie. You’ll discover how to structure sessions with clients, including using clinical assessment tools such as the IES-2.
Module 2: Unconditional Permission to Eat
In this module we’ll learn how to support clients to understand the function and impact of food restriction and rules. We will learn how to create safety when reintroducing previously off-limits or forbidden foods using collaborative and client-centered care. During this module you’ll be able to articulate the principles of habituation theory and the differences between restrained, flexible, and attuned eating. There will also be analysis around who 'unconditional' permission is available to, and how we can disrupt the unspoken assumptions inherent in the IE model.
Module 3: Reliance on Hunger and Satiety Cues
We will explore the barriers to connecting with hunger and fullness cues, and help guide clients to find more attunement in their experience. We will also explore ways of supporting and scaffolding eating in clients where interoceptive awareness may be low or hard to connect with. We will critically examine the ‘mindful eating’ paradigm and explore how this approach can be both helpful and where it might not be a good fit for some.
Module 4: Eating for Physical Rather Than Emotional Reasons + Embodiment
Help clients understand the function and purpose of so-called ‘emotional’ or ‘stress’ eating and what that may be offering them. Where it is supportive, we can help our clients find new ways of caring for themselves, while holding space for the complexity of using food as a tool of self-care. We will also explore the construct of embodiment and how we can help clients find comfort and freedom in their bodies, while acknowledging the social and structural forces that shape their experiences of embodiment.
Module 5: Body Food Choice Congruence + Movement
Here we will cover the concept of gentle nutrition to help clients guide caring for themselves with flexibility and attunement. We’ll also unpack the idea of ‘intuitive movement’ and how we can support clients with movement where that concept may be less accessible.
Module 6: Putting it All Together
Live Q+A to troubleshoot queries and applications to specialist areas of nutrition and dietetics (or other aspects of healthcare), present case studies and discuss the strengths and limitations of the approach. You can watch a prerecorded live session from a previous cohort, and attend a live session on 10th July 2024 (or send your questions to watch back later).
FAQ
-
What are the dates/times for live calls?
The sessions are prerecorded from the spring 2024 cohort. There will be one live Q+A session on 10th July 2024 (4pm BST) and periodically thereafter for future participants.
-
How long do I have to complete this course?
It is self-paces and you will have lifetime access to the course materials on the Thinkific platform
-
Who is this course suitable for?
Nutritionists, dietitians and other healthcare professionals who are involved in giving advice around food, eating and nutrition, and/or supporting folks with eating disorders, disordered eating or body image concerns. This program is not a substitute for appropriate qualification(s) in your relevant field, and you as a clinician/practitioner are responsible for staying within your scope of practice. This program is for informational and educational purposes only, and is not a substitute for clinical supervision or appropriate clinical registration.
-
Is this course accredited for CPD hours?
The course has previously been approved for 6 CPD units from the Association For Nutrition (AfN) and so I have no reason to believe it won’t be reaccredited. However, courses are not required to be accredited for them to ‘count’, as long as you complete your reflective practice appropriately, you can still log the hours.
-
Are there any discounts available for this course?
If you are a student, under or unemployed, please contact [email protected] for equity pricing discounts. I can also offer group discounts for NHS teams/departments - please get in touch. Unfortunately we can't offer split payments currently - please get in touch if this affects you.
-
Will this course make me qualified to become a Certified Intuitive Eating Counsellor?
No, the material presented in this course is different but complementary to the Intuitive Eating Counsellor course. You do not have to be an Intuitive Eating Counsellor to participate in this course. This is a standalone course, and alongside appropriate supervision, will equip you to offer compassionate, weight-inclusive care to your clients.
-
I have taken this course in the past, is it worthwhile doing it again?
While much of the practical aspects of the course remain consistent, the updated course will reflect developments in the literature, and incorporate more critical discussion of the limitations of the approach. If you are looking to refresh and update your knowledge, as well as think critically about how you engage with this work, then I think you will find the new course to be of value.
-
Do you offer training for professionals working with children and/or families?
Yes, please see the Raising Embodied Eaters course on the Thinkific platform
-
I can’t make the sessions live - can I watch them back?
The modules are all prerecorded so you can watch them in your own time. The only exception is the live Q+A on 10th July. If you cannot make this live then you can submit questions ahead of time to watch back at your convenience.
